In 2024, our client approached us with a vision: they wanted to show the world the beauty of Kazakhstan and Mongolia. They envisioned a platform to connect international travelers with local nomadic communities. However, while they had the vision, they didn’t have a technical plan or a roadmap. They needed a partner to create the product from the ground up.
Over a two-year long-term partnership, we transformed this vision into a high-performing digital ecosystem. Combining mobile technology with deep product consultancy, we helped our client digitize everything from remote homestays to traditional guided tours, bringing rural tourism into the global spotlight.
The challenges we faced
When we sat down with the team, we realized this wasn’t a typical marketplace project. We faced three major hurdles:
- The “zero-tech” reality: Many of the hosts and service providers in rural areas have very limited experience with smartphones. A complex interface like Airbnb would simply be ignored. We had to build something that felt natural to someone who had never managed a digital business before.
- A blank canvas: The client had a powerful vision but no technical roadmap. There were no feature lists or backend specifications, just a goal to empower local communities.
- Cultural logic: Western booking standards don’t always apply in Central Asia. We needed to build a system that respected local logistical habits and communication styles.
Moving beyond coding to product creators
Our role had to evolve from a traditional software vendor to that of a Product Creator and strategic partner.
Since the client lacked software experience, we took the lead on consultancy. We helped them translate their high-level ideas into a functional feature set, prioritizing what would actually move the needle for a traveler in Mongolia or a host in Kazakhstan.
Alongside that, we applied a Design Thinking framework to solve the “Zero-Tech” constraint. We simplified the UI and stripped it down to the essentials. Also, we focused on high-contrast visuals, intuitive navigation, and a flow that allowed a host to accept a booking in just two taps.
What we built
We deployed a dedicated team of six, covering everything from Mobile and Web to DevOps and BA to ensure the platform was as stable as it was simple.
A simplified mobile application (flutter)
We built a robust app focusing heavily on ease of use. This allows local hosts to manage bookings, adjust availability, and communicate with guests seamlessly, without needing advanced technical skills. Flutter ensured a high-quality experience across all mobile devices.
A secure booking engine
This trusted transaction platform allowed international tourists to confidently book and pay for authentic homestays and unique services, building necessary trust in what was previously a fragmented, peer-to-peer market.
Web administration portal
We provided a comprehensive management backend (using ReactJS and NodeJS) allowing the platform owners to oversee operations, track logistics, and manage payments across diverse regions.
The remarkable results
The impact of the marketplace was immediate. It changed lives and business landscape.
- Successful market entry: The platform successfully launched in Kazakhstan and Mongolia, creating a new digital revenue stream for communities that were previously invisible to the global market.
- High adoption rates: Because of our simplified UX, non-tech-savvy hosts embraced the platform, proving that technology is never too complex when designed with the user in mind.
- A trusted partnership: What started as a project evolved into a continuous 2-year engagement. Our ability to stabilize the system and provide strategic advice solidified a long-term bond between us and the client.
Over two years, we went from a blank slate to a fully working marketplace, one that gave rural communities in Kazakhstan and Mongolia their first real presence in the global travel market.
Now the platform is live, the hosts are onboarded, and travelers from around the world are booking experiences that didn’t exist digitally just two years ago. For us, that’s what good work looks like.
If you are a startup or a growing business with a big vision but no technical roadmap, we’d love to be the partner that helps you figure it out.
