web development trends
5 minutes read

Fail to stay up with current web development trends can significantly impact your website’s performance and user engagement. Over time, business owners risk falling behind their competitors and losing visitors to websites that provide superior user experiences.

Developers are forerunners in technological innovation; therefore, they are continuously looking forward. These trends have one thing in common: help you construct a better-functioning site and make it more SEO friendly.

1. Progressive Web Apps (WPAs)

With smartphones and tablets representing more than half of internet traffic[1] currently, there is a well-established necessity for businesses to target clients on mobile devices. Companies wishing to attract mobile consumers have three options: construct a native app, a responsive website, or a progressive web application (PWA).

PWA is famous for various reasons, including its ability to replace native mobile applications. PWAs provide a fast experience even when the user is disconnected or on an unstable network. Many web design firms worldwide have begun to provide PWA solutions to their clients. Along with an excellent user experience, PWA includes capabilities such as push notifications and offline access to cached information.

Top firms using PWA:

  • AliExpress – eCommerce site for international internet shoppers: Increase time spent per session by nearly three quarters
  • Forbes – US tabloid newspaper: reduced the average page size from 2MB to just 30KB

2. Accelerate Mobile Pages (AMPs)

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) is not entirely the upcoming future of web development since it’s already been here for 2 years. Yet, it’s still gaining huge traction up to this day. AMP is an open-source effort that allows websites to load extremely quickly. AMP pares web pages to their essentials, eliminating scripts that slow them down. In a word, AMP enhances the entire user experience and the visibility of a website in search results.

The usage of AMP will accelerate as search engine optimization (SEO) shifts to mobile devices. You might consider the following benefits of switching to AMP for a website:

Minimize load speed

A typical web page takes roughly three seconds to load, but an AMP page takes about half a second. Faster loading enhances the overall user experience. Websites that have switched to AMP have seen incredible benefits in lower bounce rates and greater conversions.

According to Google, AMP-powered e-commerce websites saw a 20% improvement in sales conversion compared to non-AMP pages[2]. The analysis also discovered that AMP results in a 10% boost in website traffic and a two-fold increase in average time spent on the page.

Higher mobile ranking

Although AMP support isn’t an official ranking criterion, it can favor mobile results due to quicker load times and increased convenience. AMP web pages will eventually outnumber regular sites in search results.

Improved server performance

AMP is an excellent solution for websites that receive a high volume of mobile visitors. AMP minimizes the strain on a website server and enhances performance.

3. Responsive Website

Responsive web design is the modern web development trends for building dynamic websites. The concept of responsive web design proposes that design and development should adapt to the user’s behavior and surroundings based on screen size, platform, and orientation. Every second, thousands of mobile devices make search requests on the internet. This implies that businesses should use responsive web design to develop websites that instantly adapt to any screen.

Many difficulties are solved through technology, such as enhancing user experience and increasing the length of time a user spends on a website. Furthermore, Google has already said mobile friendliness will be a ranking component in its search engine algorithms.

Responsive web design may help web developers in different ways:

  1. It takes less time than building a separate mobile site.
  2. It is simple to keep track of analytics data.
  3. Responsive web design is easier to maintain since the design remains consistent across devices.

Some instances of responsive web design:

  • Dribbble’s website uses a flexible grid with a five-column grid on desktop and laptop and a two-column one on tablets and mobile phones.
  • Unlike on desktop and tablet platforms, where their signup form is prominently displayed, GitHub merely displays a call-to-action button on mobile. To access the form, users must first click the call to action.
  • The user experience on Shopify is consistent across all devices. The only differences were the call-to-action button and graphics.

4. Voice Search Optimization

Every smartphone already has a digital voice assistant (Siri for iPhones, Google Assistant for Android-based phones). Furthermore, AI-enabled intelligent speakers are gaining popularity, with a forecast figure of 8.4 billion digital voice assistants worldwide in 2024[3].

Voice Search Web Development Trends

The first factor that drives this trend forwards is simplicity. We don’t have to learn how to communicate. As a result, both youngsters and the elderly can engage with speech interfaces without difficulty. The second factor would be affordability. Digital voice assistants are already a widespread smartphone feature. Smart speakers are not yet widely available, but a price beginning at $50 is an excellent starting point for growth.

Voice search is one of the most innovative e-commerce web development trends. It is, nevertheless, relevant to all enterprises on the internet. If you want your web app to be found, optimize it as soon as feasible for voice search.

5. AI Chatbots

An AI-powered chatbot is a more intelligent variant of a standard chatbot. Natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) are used in technology to grasp user intent better and give a human-like experience. AI-powered bots include sophisticated functionality such as 24/7 problem-solving and behavior analytics. Experts believe that self-learning bots are the future and that corporations may save money by replacing human support managers. It can also be implemented into regular/professional websites and PWAs.

According to Research Dive, the worldwide chatbot market’s revenue is expected to reach $19,570.0 million by 2027, rising at a CAGR of 28.7% over the forecast period (2020-2027)[4].

AI-Powered Chatbots are a trend that is seen to be an excellent long-term investment. As clients want increasingly feature-rich deliverables, AI-powered chatbots can help developers provide an excellent user experience and replace navigational website elements to make development easier. As chatbots become more integrated with messengers, developers do not need to build multiple applications.

6. Content Personalization

The capacity of software to increase performance without direct input from engineers is referred to as machine learning. The program analyzes incoming data, discovers trends, makes judgments, and enhances performance.

Natural language and picture recognition can help to improve user experience. The computer can analyze data and make sound judgments thanks to machine perception. Machine learning is being applied in online apps in various areas, including healthcare, finance, education, and agriculture. This technique provides significant gains that would be impossible without artificial intelligence.

An instance of a successful firm embracing this trend would be Pinterest. Pinterest fundamentally arranges interests and ideas into what we call themes. When someone initially signs up, we ask them to choose their interests from a list of themes, which we then use to create a personalized home feed.

7. Motion UI

In short, motion UI is a front-end framework for creating utterly responsive web designs. The technology allows developers to generate motion within a native app scenario. It has a predetermined movement that may be utilized for any design project.

With web development and new trends, any product may be as appealing and engaging as possible. The Motion UI is a terrific approach to entice clients with appealing animations and CSS transitions that allow developers to experiment with them as they see fit. It is versatile enough to function with any JavaScript framework, making it ideal for various applications.

Try upgrading your web app using motion UI approaches to boost engagement and deliver better UI/UX to users. You can start by using animations to guide users through your app, indicating which action to take next. Then try some catchy animations to respond to user motions and show the relationships between the various components of an app. These are some common yet highly effective.

8. Serverless Architecture

One of the web development trends is serverless architecture, which allows developers to design and support software without worrying about the underlying infrastructure. When a function is requested, the cloud provider executes it on an existing server or launches a new server to carry out the operation. While this web technology implementation is abstracted away from developers, they can focus on creating and delivering application code.

According to MarketsandMarkets, the worldwide serverless architecture industry will rise to $21.1 billion by 2025[5]. More products, such as chatbots, IoT apps, and APIs, will use serverless functions to execute activities such as obtaining file backups, sending notifications, and exporting objects.

Both small startups and large enterprises are using serverless architectures for similar reasons. Cloud companies bill you per invocation, so you’re not paying for idle servers or virtual machines. Engineers that utilize serverless may release their code without having to manage any servers, which speeds up delivery cycles and allows companies to grow their operations swiftly.

9. Dark Mode Web Version

Low-light websites have grown in popularity in recent years. Dark mode user interfaces (UIs) will continue to be available on websites and applications in 2023 since surveys show that at least 8 out of 10 people prefer to utilize dark mode whenever feasible[6]. As more site developers give a comparable built-in option to switch between light and dark modes, it may become a default. It is suitable for low-light situations, allows less “blue light,” and requires less energy, reducing eye strain and dryness.

This functionality is already available on Facebook and Twitter. With these two tech giants leading the trend, more and more site developers are beginning to add the transition between dark and light mode.

10. Multi–experience Web Development

Mobile-friendly web are required, yet a new and exciting trend creation has emerged. Welcome to multi-experience – the ability to allow customers to use your web app anywhere they want: on a tablet, a wristwatch, in a car, and so on. The goal is to create an web app that looks nice, runs well, and adds value to any device while remaining engaging and helpful.

multi experiences web development

As mentioned above, mobile devices account for over half of all web traffic worldwide. Furthermore, approximately three-quarters of worldwide e-commerce sales are completed on mobile devices. These statistics show that adopting a mobile-first strategy for web development has become critical.

For many years, many developers have followed this technique. However, what it means to be “mobile-friendly” constantly changes. It includes integrating geolocation data to provide highly tailored customer experiences, allowing one-click ordering on e-commerce applications, and implementing biometric identification such as fingerprint scanning or voice recognition in 2023.

11. Push Notification

Push notifications are a common technique for users to communicate with one another. Brands and applications utilize them to promote their products and services. Push notification provides marketers with the tools to develop and distribute push alerts. The most well-known organizations that employ these web development trends are Uber, Lyft, Amazon Prime Now, Starbucks, and Target. On Facebook, for example, individuals can receive a notification via the “Create Event” button when an event they are invited to is established. The iPhone employs the “notification center,” while Android has built-in notification systems that employ various tones.

Companies may use push notifications to engage their audiences quite effectively. Push notifications may track campaign performance, deliver digital marketing, and send social media campaigns.

12. Cybersecurity

The latest technology in cybersecurity involves being concerned about hardware/software or data protection from hackers. Individuals and corporations use the technique to prevent unauthorized access to data centers and other digital systems.

Cybersecurity

A flaw exposed the data of 52.5 million Google+ users in December 2018[7]. This came only two months after another Google+ data leak was revealed. In reaction to these two instances, Google+ was shut down in April 2019, the first six months of 2022 saw a considerable surge in DDoS activity worldwide. In Asia and the United States, assaults ranged from hacktivism to terabit strikes.

A potent cybersecurity program can provide enough protection against cyber threats to obtain access to change, delete, destroy, or extort essential data from an organization’s or user’s systems. It is also critical for improving the status of web development in 2023 by avoiding assaults that disrupt the system operation.

13. Single-Page Application

A single-page application (SPA) does not need to be reloaded while being used in a browser. The user might have a natural and smooth experience. SPAs are the daily programs we use, such as Facebook, Gmail, and Twitter. It is one of the top web development trends for 2023, and it is projected that most functional websites will be designed as SPAs in the future.

Most of the content remains intact, with only a tiny fraction requiring updating. Customers can see SPA without needing data from the server. As a result, performance increases, and you have the impression that you are using native software. Recent innovations in web technologies give customers a more dynamic online experience, making users’ work swift and functional.

14. Micro Frontends

The microservices architecture has recently gained popularity among software developers worldwide. Unlike hefty, monolithic old-school back-end, this development style provides greater flexibility and scalability. However, front-end remains complicated, and business and startup engineers must deal with monolithic codebases that construct user interfaces.

A monolithic front-end is not just difficult to maintain. It may also impact the project’s overall quality and impede your achievement. Fortunately, one of the 2023 trends demonstrates how to prevent a possible issue.

No matter what market you design for, your engineering team should analyze this tendency and include it in your new product. This would improve the development flow, cooperation, code reworking, and support, resulting in a more robust online application.

Wrapping Up

With these modern web development trends in 2023, Synodus might feel that more than a year has passed in the realm of technology. The new web development technologies we employ to cope with information are continually evolving, as is the data itself.
